Explaining
A boring, yet necessary teaching method for a Physical Education teacher is explaining. When introducing a new sport the teacher has no other choice but to explain how to play the game. Now, to spice things up a bit I would make it visual as well and ask for students who knew the game well to help demonstrate. That way if a student has a question they can ask me or it could even be answered by just watching. Then after the explanation the students will then get to try it on their own, however; my job is not done at that point. Then, I would have to walk around and see if there were any who did not understand and explain it to them again. As I said it is not as fun as the other methods but it does get the job done.
Guest Speaker
I have always enjoyed guest speakers and when a teacher is working in a very different setting then classroom I feel that guest speakers are a nice change up. Also, in Physical Education there could be a variety of different speakers that a teacher could get ranging from athletes to dietitians. Now, I would make the students write a little summary, just a page or so, to have them write what they learned. Also, I would need to make sure that I got an interesting speaker, because if the students are bored then they will not learn anything which defeats the whole purpose. However, there are still some speakers that I remember from middle school, so i know first hand how effective they actually can be.
Students Teaching One Another
I think that having the students involved in teaching one day is a great idea to get students involved. I have done this in some of my classes and at first I was embarrassed to talk in front of my class, but at the end of the day it was really fun. When you have students teach they really see that what a teacher does is not that easy and I would really like to get that point across to them. Also, when students are teaching their peers it not only gets everyone more involved, but it makes the students interact more. I would pick out the teaching groups in order to mix it up in the class and get everyone really involved and friendly towards on another, that why I felt a classroom would benefit from students teaching each other
VIDEOTAPING
One method I was really excited when I came across was videotaping. While it is not very useful for a Physical Education teacher, if I was every in a classroom, for teaching health or whatnot, I would definitely use this strategy. First, it would be a great idea because I would be able to put up the lectures online so if any of my students had questions or they missed something in the notes they could then reference back to the actual class. Also, I feel that if there was a video taping, it would make the students want to participate more because they would know someone is watching. A lot of times they do not want to raise their hand and talk in class but if they know I could look back and see what they injected during that class period, it could make more speak. Then that would lighten the atmosphere of the class and make it more fun to learn, that why I was ecstatic when I thought of videotaping.
Brainstorming
Being a teacher about to go into the field of physical education, not many would expect Brainstorming as a proper method of teaching, yet I completely disagree. Many times in a Physical Education Class, the teachers pick sports or games that the students are not interested in and therefore they do not exert the maximum effort they could, and they become bored. I believe that in beginning of the year, a Physical Education teacher should brainstorm with the students somethings that they would really enjoy doing. I am not saying that you should not have any idea what you are doing and there should not be a lesson plan, but getting the students opinions would get their attention and show that you really care about how they feel. If I am able to incorporate what they want to do then maybe they would respect to try their hardest at what I want them to do as well. It's not just about me trying to control students, we have to meet half way.
Hey!!!
Hi it's Taylor Irvin! I am going to be a Physical Education teacher and coach and I someday hope to be an administrator. I believe teaching methods are very important when it comes to teaching, especially physical education. Obesity it a big problem in today's society and I really would like to help reduce that. I really want to take a hands on approach being a teacher and I would like to have a life long influence on my students and I believe how you teach is how I will be able to accomplish that.
